This course introduces students to mokuhanga, the traditional Japanese method of water‑based woodblock printmaking, through hands‑on practice in carving, preparing paper with a damp pack, using kento registration, and printing with watercolor or gouache using a surikomi brush. Students will gain an understanding of how tools, materials, moisture, and pressure work together to create the distinctive qualities of this process while developing their own small edition or series of prints. The class combines direct instruction with dedicated studio work time, allowing students to learn at their own pace with guidance and troubleshooting support. Both beginners and returning students are welcome, and each session offers opportunities to build skills, refine technique, and explore personal approaches to this thoughtful, meditative form of printmaking.
Carving tools, paint, baren and brushes are not provided. Please see materials list for further detail, available at communityarts.org/materials.
