Established in 1899 by Francisco Borges and his family, Old Borges Ranch preserves one of the region's best examples of an early California cattle ranch. Explore the historic ranch house, barns, blacksmith shop, corrals, and antique farm equipment while experiencing what ranch life was like more than a century ago.
More than a historic landmark
Today, Old Borges Ranch remains an active destination within Shell Ridge Open Space, welcoming visitors for hiking, picnics, educational programs, and seasonal events.
Step inside history
The Borges family home has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981. On the second Saturday of each month, visitors can enjoy a free Open House, tour the historic buildings, and learn what life was like on a working family ranch from Walnut Creek Open Space staff.
🐐 Did you know?
Old Borges Ranch is home to goats, sheep, chickens, and other farm animals cared for by Pleasant Hill 4-H. Pets are welcome throughout most of the ranch but are not permitted inside the animal pastures.
🐕 Dogs
Permitted at most areas of the ranch but they must be leashed at all times. Pets are not permitted in the animal pastures, at programs, tours, or events.
