Starting from the Marshall Drive entrance, this scenic loop climbs through the rolling hills of Shell Ridge Open Space to Fossil Hill, where expansive views stretch across Walnut Creek, Mount Diablo, and the surrounding Diablo Foothills. Along the way you'll hike through open grasslands and oak woodlands, with opportunities to spot deer, hawks, songbirds, and seasonal wildflowers.
This 3.2-mile loop features 515 feet of elevation gain, making it a rewarding moderate hike with a mix of gentle climbs and panoramic ridgeline scenery. Fossil Hill's elevated viewpoints and diverse wildlife make this one of Shell Ridge's most memorable shorter hikes.
