View trail detailsStarting from historic Borges Ranch, this scenic loop follows the Foothills, Franco Ridge, Sugarloaf–Shell Ridge, and Borges Ranch trails through some of Shell Ridge Open Space's most diverse landscapes. Along the way you'll hike across rolling grasslands, oak woodlands, and scenic ridgelines, with panoramic views of Mount Diablo, the Diablo Foothills, and the surrounding valleys.
This 5.5-mile loop features 951 feet of elevation gain, making it a rewarding moderate hike with a mix of steady climbs and sweeping vistas. Beginning and ending at Borges Ranch, the route passes seasonal vernal pools, open grazing lands, and excellent wildlife habitat, offering opportunities to spot deer, hawks, grazing cattle, and colorful spring wildflowers.
