Starting from the neighborhood trailhead near Franco Ridge, this route climbs across the rolling grasslands of Shell Ridge Open Space before following Sugarloaf Ridge Trail to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Mount Diablo foothills. In spring, the hills come alive with colorful wildflowers, while the open grasslands provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching.
This 2-mile out-and-back hike features 419 feet of elevation gain, making it a rewarding option for hikers looking for a shorter climb with expansive ridge views. Neighborhood street parking is available near the trailhead, or you can start from Rudger Park for a slightly longer hike.
