Starting from historic Borges Ranch, this scenic route follows Fairy Lantern Trail through the rolling hills of Shell Ridge Open Space before climbing toward Castle Rock. Along the way you'll pass open grasslands, oak woodlands, seasonal wildflowers, and sweeping views of Mount Diablo and the surrounding valleys.
This 2.5-mile out-and-back hike features 472 feet of elevation gain, making it a rewarding option for hikers looking for a shorter climb with spectacular scenery. Beginning at one of Walnut Creek's most historic ranches, the route combines local history with some of Shell Ridge's most memorable landscapes.
