Foothills, Franco Ridge, Sugarloaf-Shell Ridge, and Borges Ranch Loop

Starting from historic Borges Ranch, this scenic loop follows Foothills, Hazard, Franco Ridge, Sugarloaf–Shell Ridge, and Borges Ranch trails through some of the most diverse landscapes in Shell Ridge Open Space. Along the way you'll hike across rolling grasslands, oak woodlands, seasonal wetlands, and open ridgelines with sweeping views of Mount Diablo and the surrounding valleys.

This 5.5-mile loop features 951 feet of elevation gain, making it one of the longer and more rewarding hikes in Shell Ridge. Keep an eye out for grazing cattle and local wildlife, including mule deer, red-tailed hawks, California quail, and scrub jays.
